The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1)

*The first in a series of some books that are family favorites that I haven't reviewed yet. *

Best quote:

"Randolph shook his head in disgust. 'Those movies...ridiculously inaccurate. The real gods of Asgard—Thor, Loki, Odin, and the rest—are much more powerful, much more terrifying than anything Hollywood could concoct.'

'But...they're myths. They're not real.'

Randolph gave me a sort of pitying look. 'Myths are simply stories about truths we've forgotten.'"

Mythology is one of my favorite genres to read and In this story, Magnus Chase finds out that he is a Norse demigod. If you've read the Percy Jackson books Magnus and Percy are similar in (sarcastic) voice. That’s a big complaint among readers of this series.

I didn’t mind it. I think of it like watching a cheesy TV series, you may be able to guess the general plot, but it is still fun to watch. Like most Disney movies his main characters usually have one parent missing and another struggling. The twist being that the kid is a demigod which always comes with some perks. When kids tell me they don’t like to read these books often are the nudge that works and I’m not going to argue with success.

The descriptions of Norse heaven and the Hotel Valhalla were the highlights of this universe for me. Even if you consider the Marvel version of Thor (which isn’t exactly spot on in its interpretation of the Norse Myths) there just aren’t enough middle grade books centering on the Norse and this series is a great jumping in point even if you haven’t read any of the other Riordan series.

It’s a family fave. We even have the audiobook.

The character Samiriah, a Valkyrie who happens to also be a Muslim teenager was the stand out character in this story for me. Sam, daughter of Loki, was made a Valkyrie by Odin. I’d love to read a spin off series centered on her.
