School For Minions: Twice Cursed

I somehow missed this series entirely, which goes to show that there is a book out there for every kind of reader and there are books that are excellent that you may never hear about.

I had no time to go back and read books 1-3 and still be able to get this review up in time for its release date. It was a lot like catching the last half of a hilarious movie. This is going to be sort of a half review as I was confused from the get-go. The writing was clear and the plot moved along at a great pace. The problem is that there is such a huge amount of world building that obviously was covered in books 1-3 that I ended up looking up some synopsis of those stories to get context for this one.

So, unlike most "magical schools" these kids aren't trying to be the best hero or villain possible, just the best minion. The world they live in is run by Evil Overlords and the main character, Runt Higgins, is a werewolf. His friends are a gargoyle and a tree nymph. His school librarian is a zombie- you get the idea. I had never stumbled across this series and I know a lot of kids will enjoy immersing themselves in this mythologically deep school so I wrote this up just to give it some press. You'll also have the fun of not waiting in between installments as you can read all four books almost immediately.

Verdict- Read books 1-3 first.  I've got them on hold at the library myself.

I'm a lifelong bibliophile who happens to love children's books and who should have become a librarian. Instead I horde books in case of apocalypse or the enactment of a Fahrenheit 451 type law. My five kids accept my addiction and have learned to accept books in odd places.
