Swing it, Sunny

I was charmed by the 1970's setting. So much of each panel was like looking into my childhood. I've become a big fan of the graphic novel.

Set in the 1976-77 school year, Sunny is starting middle school after spending a summer with Gramps (in “Sunny Side Up”). Sunny's big brother Dale goes to military boarding school after getting into trouble with drugs. Sunny and her parents are worried about him and unsure if they are doing the right thing. I liked that Sunny knows her parents are feeling as lost as she is.

I thought the honest, straight forward tone was perfect. Sunny goes on living her middle school life all the while trying to understand what if anything she can do to help her brother Dale. The situation is real without being depressing. You can read this as a stand alone, but I always prefer reading books in order so you may want to check out Sunny Side Up first.
