Mandatory Curriculum Post Fall 2017

As I begin year sixteen of homeschooling, I've noticed a few things. One is that choosing curriculum doesn't get any easier. Each child is different, and each year we seem to have different circumstances that affect my teaching. I base my "typical" homeschool year off of the plan outlined in The Well Trained Mind By Susan Wise Bauer now in its fourth edition I've owned them all. I can't recommend it enough. Here's a quick run through of our textbook selections:

Some things have stood the test of time. We're using Saxon Math as that has been my go to math program for several children. I'm combining it with Beast Academy, and a bunch of living math books so it shouldn't suck all of the joy out of numbers for us.

I'm generally a fan of everything EPS publishes. If you need a spelling only book- check out the MegaWords series.

I'm looking forward to this new Grammar program. Amazon tells me it will ship September 19.  I have an oldie but goodie as my back up plan. (Voyages in English)

Latin- I'm still learning Latin. Most years we attempt a full schedule, sometimes we make it through the entire year. We had this on the shelf so I'm giving it another go. If it doesn't work out then we'll bounce to either English from the Roots Up or First Form Latin. I've been at this so long that even my planned books have back ups.

We're doing something different this year for Science. I've had this on the shelf for a few years and since no science curriculum is inspiring me this year this is the winner.

I have the 2003 edition. We're going to work our way through history reading, narrating, marking dates on a timeline and reading literature from the ancient time. I also own Oak Meadow grade 6 Ancient History and we'll match that up and read from the applicable chapters.

I am intrigued with Beast Academy so I got the level three books that we can work through during the time I set aside for logic.

I've been through this series many times and it is by far my favorite script. I have HWT and Calvert waiting in the wings, I'm hoping this is the year that the kid just gets legible handwriting and we can ditch the workbooks.

I'm working on my Spanish and Declan chose German. We abandoned Russian last year after it proved too hard without a tutor.

We may take more than one year to get through this material. It's going to be a big jump from last year.

I just got this into my hot little hands. I'll do a full review soon. Until then I can tell you that from first glance this is doable. As in, art might actually get done regularly around here this year.

This shelf contains books I pulled today for the slot in our day known as Reading. I'm not sure what order we'll attack them in. This will probably take us to December. I'll run a what we're reading update once a week after we get going. I get questions about scheduling and I'm actually working on a new lesson planning doc. Until I pull that together here is a basic how we divide the subjects up by week.
